In simplified terms, COI estimates the probability that an offspring will inherit two copies of a gene that are identical by descent because of shared ancestry.

However, COI should be interpreted carefully.
A COI is not a health guarantee.
A lower COI does not guarantee healthy puppies, and a higher COI does not mean that every puppy will develop a genetic disorder.
