Bracket linebreeding is a structured breeding approach designed to preserve the influence of a desired family or ancestor while strategically introducing less-related blood into the pedigree.

Rather than repeatedly breeding close relatives, the breeder works within a controlled “bracket” — returning to a desired family while using carefully selected outcrosses to maintain genetic diversity and address weaknesses.

COEFFICIENT OF INBREEDING — COI

The coefficient of inbreeding (COI) estimates the probability that two alleles at a given locus are identical by descent as a result of common ancestry.

A classic pedigree-based formula is:

When multiple common ancestors exist, their individual contributions are calculated and combined.
